There was an attempt to give her some backstory but it felt very unearned it was hard to attribute any of those traits described to her because she didn’t really do much until the very end of the story. Half of the time the narration was just going on about how uniquely attractive she was and how Teig felt they’d been trauma bonded.
It felt like it had been dropped in as an afterthought frankly. It was told within the span of a paragraph or so and it felt of such little consequence. I understand that it helps to bolster his “always letting loved ones down” status but it felt so far removed from the story itself that I just never bought it. I also hated Teig’s story about his deceased sister Olivia. A naive and selfish guy, and while this was probably the authors intent I just found it too irritating to get past personally. On the other hand, I didn’t care for any of the characters (minus Prentiss a bit) and actually could barely stand to read about Teig. The one thing I really did enjoy about it was the pacing, the fact that it was a steady stream of commotion and chaos and that it felt authentic in terms of how events like this would actually unfold in a harsh wintry environment. I decided to give it a shot during a 12 hour overnight shift at my other job and finished it all in one sitting, because the company only makes a horror novel it’s monthly pick once in a blue moon sadly, and the last one was Stephen Graham Jones’s The Only Good Indians…I figured it would have to at least somewhat live up to that. I work at a Barnes and Noble and I believe it was last month, our monthly reader pick was this book.
