It's educational, it has great role models, but the cussing is too much. Violence: Some teens get in a fight, I'm not sure I didn't read the whole thing. Even if you are Black you shouldn't not be using that word to be greeting your friend, relative, let alone your teacher. It somewhat teaches Black people that it is okay to greet people using the N word. (F***, s***, bitch, ass, asshole, the N word is used multiple times) I feel like the N word shouldn't be in this book at all. Not even in the first 10 pages of the book, we hear the word 'condoms' and 'virginity'. But you can't let a 9 year old read this! No 9 year old should be reading thisīefore handing your child this book, have a conversation about the material in this book. 12+? Unless your child is very mature and can understand the words then good. If I had a child I would never let my young child read this.

If you want your kid to read this book, fine, but be prepared for a long awkward conversation about drugs and sex and police brutality.Ĭommon sense media is definitely on something. I rate 16+ because of all the mature content. I couldn't even finish this book because of the sex and cursing! In conclusion this book is beneficial for many different types of people to learn more about society. This makes the setting of the book seem very real. Angie Thomas included very educated people and not so educated people living in the same lifestyle. Although the book is really good, the way the characters are explained is very good too. Seeing this book talk about what happens in today's real life world in society makes me feel like many people are educated and know what's happening in today's world. The Hate You Give did an amazing job of making these issues not seem so bad. Some of these concepts such as racism and discrimination are hard to explain to the younger generation. She wanted the novel to be a real life connection. I think that Angie Thomas wanted younger readers to be able to connect to her novel.

While reading I see many ways how someone can be comfortable and get used to new life styles. In my opinion I feel that it is very entertaining watching someone like my friends, and seeing what they go through on a daily basis. Just like Starr I often feel insecure about where I belong in many different communities and places that I am not used to. So I can relate to the main character Starr. Being a person that has many african american friends, I feel that I have been through alot with them and felt a lot of what they went through. Although it speaks to the younger generation it still touches on some of the key events that were being discussed. The book has many connections to the younger generation. It covers topics such as racism in different communities and self consciousness. The book The Hate You Give is well known to be a novel that is very educational.
